Two men in white push a wicker sledge with your family in it two kilometres down a public road from Monte to Livramento, in about ten minutes.
It is fast on the steep stretches without ever feeling out of control, and the carreiros in their white uniforms and straw hats are what a child talks about afterwards. It is also short for the money, and the queue when a cruise ship is in can be longer than the ride. It ends at Livramento, not in town: from there it is a taxi, a bus or a long walk down.
Worth knowing: Go before ten or after four, check whether a ship is berthed, and bring cash - there are no card payments and no online sales. In rain they refuse three-person sledges, so a family of three may be split or turned away.
