Open three-wheelers doing one- to four-hour Funchal circuits - the city, Cristo Rei, Monte and the toboggan, or Cabo Girão - charged by the vehicle rather than by the head.

With children this works less as a tour than as a way of getting somewhere awkward without driving it yourself: Monte, the Cristo Rei headland, the Cabo Girão skywalk. Three passengers travel for the two-passenger price, which makes it competitive with taxis for a family, and the open sides mean children see out, which they cannot in a coach. There is nothing to strap a small child into - no seat belts and no child seats in an open tuk-tuk - and an hour is short once you subtract the photo stops.

Worth knowing: Give the children's ages when you book, and ask for the Monte route rather than Cabo Girão if anyone is under about six: the coast road is long, cold and loud. The Toboggan Sledges tour does not include the sledge itself, which is still cash at Monte.
