Teleférico das Achadas da Cruz

Porto Moniz

  • Partly covered
  • From 3
  • Children from 3 €
  • Just turn up

A farmers' cable car that drops 450 metres down a cliff face to a working fajã in five minutes, for three euros one way.

This is transport for the people who farm the terraces below and it feels like it: a small box on a steep wire, not a tourist gondola. Children who liked the Funchal cable car usually love this one more and nervous adults usually do not. At the bottom there are vines, banana plants and a stony shore, and no café, no shade and no toilets - which is the point, but it decides how long you can stay.

Worth knowing: Telephone before driving across the island. It stops for wind and for maintenance, there is no online status page, and it is an hour and a quarter from Funchal followed by a narrow lane. Bring cash; the bottom station opens onto a rough farm track, so leave the pushchair in the car.
