Madeira's first cable car, from 1997: five minutes down the Santana clifftop to the black-pebble shore of the Rocha do Navio nature reserve.

Short, cheap and quiet, and what waits at the bottom is a wild pebble shore with vines and banana plants rather than a garden or a café. Treat it as a bonus on a Santana day and not a reason to drive north - it is out of service often enough that families arrive to a locked gate, and nobody publishes when.

Worth knowing: Bring cash, there is no card machine and no sign saying so, and have a plan B: the Santana traditional houses and the theme park are both ten minutes away. The clifftop viewpoint is worth the stop even when the car is not running.
