A seven-hour 4x4 day round the east of the island - Pico do Areeiro, Ribeiro Frio, Santana, Ponta de São Lourenço - with a booking category for under-sixes travelling in a child seat.

Worth recording rather than one of the dozens of resellers because of the booking form itself: it prices adult 12-plus, child 6-11 and Infant/Booster/Chair separately, so the restraint question is settled before anyone gets in the car. Portuguese law requires a restraint under twelve years and 135 cm, and a jeep tour is not exempt. Families report taking children of three, five and seven without trouble, but seven hours from a 09:00 start is the real catch, and the mountain road up to Areeiro is where travel sickness happens.

Worth knowing: Email first and get it in writing that a proper seat, not a booster cushion, will be in the vehicle, and ask to sit forward. The Balcões stop now carries its own 4.50 € trail fee for over-twelves on top of the tour price.
