A guided two-hour sea-kayak outing from Cais 8 on the Funchal seafront, priced for children from six and run four times a day.
This is a guided paddle rather than a hire desk, and for a family the point is that the minimum age is published, low and unambiguous: six. The guide sets the pace for beginners, and four slots a day - including an early morning and an evening one - let you dodge the middle of the day. Swimwear and a towel are on the recommended list, so expect to get wet.
Worth knowing: Take the 09:00 slot with children: the sea off Funchal is at its flattest first thing. Check-in is compulsory thirty minutes before the start.
