Funchal

  • Indoors
  • From 6
  • Children from 8 €
  • Just turn up

The island's only indoor bouldering gym - low walls, thick mats, no ropes - in a basement on Rua Conde Carvalhal, taking children from about six.

Small and unpretentious: a moonboard, hangboards, rings, and a bar with drinks and a chess set. Eight euros buys unlimited time, which suits a child who climbs in ten-minute bursts and then wanders off. Instructors get named in reviews, Steve for patience with beginners and José for adapting a session to whoever turns up. It is bouldering only, so anyone expecting ropes and a harness will be surprised.

Worth knowing: It does not open until 16:00 on weekdays and not at all on Sunday, so a rainy morning is out. Saturday from 10:00 is the only morning slot in the week.

Prices and opening times change without notice, and on this island they change often. Everything here carries the date it was checked in our research notes; if a place has moved or closed, tell us and we will fix it.
