Funchal's riding club above São Gonçalo, where a child gets a real lesson - flat work or vaulting - rather than a led walk round a paddock.
This is the island's federated riding association, organised around lessons and competitions rather than visitors, and therapeutic riding is offered alongside the sport. It is the right place for a child who already rides at home and the wrong one for a family after a half-hour photo ride: the trail rides out on the veredas and levadas explicitly require experience and always go with an instructor. Visitors expecting to drop in for a hack are turned away.
Worth knowing: Phone before you drive up - there is no website and no booking page. The mobile that gets answered is +351 926 454 849, and Monday appears to be closed.
