The Vila Baleira hire shop for bicycles, e-bikes, scooters and quads - how most families get around Porto Santo.

Porto Santo is small and mostly flat behind its nine-kilometre beach, so a bike each is genuinely enough transport for a family staying a few days, and at 3-12 € a day it undercuts everything else on the island. E-bikes make the climb to Pico do Castelo and the Portela viewpoints realistic. The quads are registered as quadricycles and need a full category B licence, and they take no child seat.

Worth knowing: Ask about children's bikes, tag-alongs and seats when you book rather than on the day - the published fleet is adult sizes, and there are few alternatives on the island. There is also no golf-cart hire on Porto Santo; the buggy tours sold to visitors are guided excursions, not self-drive.
