In response to the escalating housing crisis in Funchal, the Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira is urging the PSD/CDS-led municipal government to implement urgent and structured measures. This call to action comes amid growing frustration over the lack of progress on housing issues, including the unresolved situation at the Canto do Muro III housing complex.
The Canto do Muro III complex, which was evacuated in 2023 due to safety concerns, remains a potent symbol of the local government's inability to address housing challenges effectively. Despite numerous promises over the years, the complex's issues still linger, prompting the PS to highlight this as a significant failure of the current and past administrations.
Isabel GarcĂŞs, a prominent figure within the PS, criticized the leadership under former mayors Pedro Calado and Cristina Pedra, as well as the current administration led by Jorge Carvalho. She emphasized the importance of addressing housing as a critical sector that impacts both the local population and the island's attractiveness to tourists.
