Madeira PSP detained 15 drivers during a road-crime operation on the VR1 in the early hours of 18 October.

The Madeira Regional Command of the PSP carried out a Special Criminal Prevention Operation between 01:30 and 04:00 on 18 October to prevent and repress road crime, with particular focus on the Via Rápida (VR1). Traffic was redirected to the São Martinho junction and roundabout, where officers inspected 495 vehicles.

The operation resulted in 15 detentions. Thirteen drivers were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level of at least 1.20 g/l. Two were detained for driving without legal authorisation.

Police issued 19 Highway Code administrative offence reports. They included 12 for driving with a blood alcohol level between 0.80 g/l and 1.19 g/l, one for a level between 0.50 g/l and 0.79 g/l, two for lack of motor vehicle civil liability insurance, two for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, one for lack of documents and one for reversing on a reserved roadway.

The PSP said driving under the influence of alcohol compromises reaction capacity and significantly increases accident risk. It appealed to drivers to act responsibly, respect speed limits, use seat belts, avoid using mobile phones while driving and never drive under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances.
