The World Travel Awards recognised Madeira as Europe's Leading Island Destination for the 12th time since 2013.

Madeira won the World Travel Award for Europe's Leading Island Destination at the European World Travel Awards gala on 17 October in Kotor, Montenegro, according to Diário de Notícias Madeira.

It was Madeira's 12th win in the category since 2013. The 2026 nominees also included the Azores, the Canary Islands, Crete and the Cyclades, Cyprus, Guernsey and Jersey, Ibiza and Mallorca, Malta, Sardinia and Sicily.

AP-Madeira was nominated for Europe's Leading Tourist Board after wins in 2024 and 2025, but did not win this year, Diário de Notícias Madeira reported.

Eduardo Jesus said the renewed award showed Madeira's ability to keep a prominent position in European tourism. He said the destination's nature, cultural identity, heritage and year-round range of experiences remain distinguishing attributes.

Jesus said the awards recognise the region and tourism professionals, while encouraging investment in quality, market diversification and sustainability. He also said AP-Madeira's nomination recognised its work in international markets and its coordination with sector agents.

The World Travel Awards were created in 1993 and annually recognise excellence in travel, tourism and hospitality.
