PS-Madeira Questions Regional Government on Support for Banana Farmers Affected by Storms

In a recent development, the PS-Madeira party has raised pressing concerns regarding the support measures for banana producers on Madeira Island who have been severely affected by adverse weather conditions. The storms that hit at the end of last year have left a significant mark on the banana industry, one of Madeira's vital agricultural sectors.

Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, addressed the issue in a press conference held in Ponta do Sol, a key banana-growing region on the island. She emphasized that the impact of the storms transcends mere physical damage to the banana trees themselves. Many plants have become weakened, leading to fruits that are either undeveloped or marred with blemishes, often culminating in a total loss of the crop.

According to estimations at the beginning of the year, damages could reach up to 25% of the total banana production in 2026. However, Pessegueiro warned that this percentage might persist or even escalate as the year progresses, given the ongoing repercussions of the storms.

The PS-Madeira party is calling for transparency from the Regional Government, particularly the Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries, regarding the aid process. Pessegueiro noted that while some financial support has trickled down to farmers, there is confusion about the amounts and the criteria for distribution. She highlighted that the current funds arriving in farmers' accounts are a blend of revenues from GESBA, the Madeira Banana Growers Association, and various compensatory funds meant for storm damages.

The lack of clear communication from the government has prompted calls for a detailed disclosure of the assessments made and the financial support allocated. PS-Madeira stresses the need for clear criteria and conditions for accessing these funds, to ensure fair and adequate compensation for the affected farmers.
