Madeira GuideIn a significant charitable effort, Pingo Doce donated approximately 536 tons of food to institutions in Funchal last year as part of its 'Alimenta o Bairro' program, aimed at alleviating food insecurity in the community.
Pingo Doce, one of Portugal's leading supermarket chains, has demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by donating around 536 tons of food to institutions in Funchal throughout 2025. This initiative is part of the 'Alimenta o Bairro' program, which aims to address food insecurity by distributing surplus food from its stores to those in need.
The 'Alimenta o Bairro' program, launched in 2024, has significantly expanded its scope and efficiency, allowing Pingo Doce to donate a total of 12,000 tons of food nationwide in 2025. The program focuses on redistributing food that is near expiration or has damaged packaging but is still safe for consumption, ensuring that it reaches those who need it most.
Impact on the Community
The donations made by Pingo Doce have reached over 550 institutions in the Funchal district, benefiting countless families facing food insecurity. This initiative not only provides immediate relief but also strengthens the community's resilience by ensuring that essential needs are met.
Filipa Pimentel, Director of Sustainable Development and Local Impact at Pingo Doce, highlighted the importance of the program, stating, "It is a great pride to know that we are increasingly present in the lives of our communities, supporting those who need it most. Year after year, we seek new ways to bring such an essential good as food to more people, helping to alleviate the difficulties of so many families and making a difference in their daily lives."
Program Optimization and Future Goals
Throughout 2025, Pingo Doce optimized the program by expanding the range of eligible donation items, increasing the frequency of store donations, and providing training to both partner institutions and store employees. These efforts aim to enhance the effectiveness of the program and ensure a more tailored response to the needs of the community.
