Madeira Joins European Maritime Surveillance Mission

Madeira has become an integral part of a European mission focused on controlling and monitoring maritime fishing activities. This mission, which falls under the European Union's Joint Deployment Plan (JDP) for the Western Waters, is set to take place this month.
The mission, officially known as Operation OP#10, will operate in subarea 2 of Portugal's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This includes the maritime area between Madeira's capital, Funchal, and mainland Portugal. The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) is providing support with its vessel, the FPV Ocean Protector.
The operation aims to detect potential fishing activities by third-country vessels in EU waters and regulate fishing activities of national and community vessels in the subareas. A multidisciplinary team, including a fisheries inspector from Madeira, two inspectors from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM), and crew members from the EFCA will participate.
The FPV Ocean Protector is involved in multifunctional operations as part of European cooperation in coast guard duties. During its mission, the vessel is available to assist in search and rescue operations, maritime surveillance, and pollution response.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance European cooperation in fisheries regulation, promoting marine resource sustainability and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. The ship is expected to arrive in the region soon, signaling a significant step in international maritime collaboration.
