The Regional Government of Madeira has reversed its initial decision regarding a critical infrastructure project in Seixal, a move welcomed by both locals and political figures. This change of stance comes after significant pressure from the Socialist Party (PS), the mayor of Porto Moniz, and local residents, who have raised concerns about frequent rockfalls posing risks to commuters.
CĂ©lia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, highlighted the government's change in position as a direct result of sustained advocacy efforts. She emphasized that the government had previously overlooked safety concerns, diverting funds to less urgent projects like golf courses, while ignoring the pressing need for infrastructure improvements in Seixal.
The proposed solution involves the construction of a false tunnel along the expressway, aimed at protecting vehicles from rockfalls. However, Pessegueiro voiced skepticism over the government's commitment, noting past instances where projects were announced but not executed.
The controversy intensified with accusations from the regional secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Rodrigues, who criticized Pessegueiro for her alleged lack of initiative during her tenure as mayor. In response, Pessegueiro challenged Rodrigues to deliver on the promises made.
