LIFE Natura@night Project Illuminates Benefits of Reducing Light Pollution in Madeira
Madeira GuideThe LIFE Natura@night project, coordinated by SPEA-BirdLife, reveals significant benefits of reducing light pollution for biodiversity, energy efficiency, and quality of life in Madeira, Azores, and Canary Islands.
As the world commemorates International Day of Light on May 16, the LIFE Natura@night project, spearheaded by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) in collaboration with BirdLife International, has released promising results. The project highlights the positive impacts of reducing light pollution on biodiversity, energy efficiency, and overall quality of life across Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
The initiative, which integrates scientific research, on-the-ground action, and community involvement, showcases how municipalities can achieve up to 60% in energy savings by minimizing light pollution. This effort is not only a stride towards environmental sustainability but also a crucial step in enhancing residents' and tourists' experience by preserving the natural night sky.
On the ground, the project has demonstrated practical ways to balance necessary urban lighting with the preservation of natural habitats. For Madeira, a region renowned for its natural beauty, such initiatives are vital in maintaining its status as a top tourist destination while fostering an environmentally friendly community.
The project's achievements are particularly relevant as they align with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability. By actively involving local communities, the initiative ensures that the benefits extend beyond environmental gains to include social and economic advantages.
"In the LIFE Natura@night project, we have shown that it is possible to illuminate urban areas effectively while protecting biodiversity and achieving considerable energy savings," said Francisco José Cardoso, a representative from SPEA.
