In a recent statement, the general secretary of Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Élvio Sousa, emphasized the need for a cautious and structured reintroduction of livestock to Madeira's mountain regions. This proposal aims to balance ecological preservation with agricultural needs.
Speaking at the inauguration of new organizational bodies in the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and Calheta, Sousa urged the regional government, led by the PSD/CDS coalition, to adopt a definitive stance on this issue. He highlighted the importance of reviving traditional farming practices while ensuring the sustainability of the island's natural landscapes.
The call for action comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance rural development and maintain cultural heritage in Madeira. By encouraging the return of cattle and other livestock to the highlands, JPP believes it can foster a resurgence in local agriculture and sustain the island's unique ecological balance.
