The Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana (IHRU) has initiated a lottery for 68 affordable rental homes, including properties in Machico, Madeira, under the Programa de Apoio ao Arrendamento.

The Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana, I.P. (IHRU) has opened 18 contests to allocate 68 homes through a lottery system as part of the Programa de Apoio ao Arrendamento (PAA). The application period runs until May 22, 2026.

These affordable rental homes range from T1 to T5 typologies and are located across 25 municipalities, including Machico in Madeira. Other locations encompass major cities and regions such as Lisbon, Porto, and Setúbal.

Eligible applicants include individuals and household groups who meet the criteria set by the program and the specific conditions outlined in the contest notice. Applicants must first obtain a Registration Certificate from the PAA Platform on the Housing Portal, complete the household data, and attach the necessary documentation.

Submissions are made via the IHRU Arrenda platform. Notably, 48 of the 68 homes have been rehabilitated with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Union's NextGenerationEU initiative, involving a €2.4 million investment.

Machico, a historic town in Madeira, offers a unique blend of natural scenery and cultural heritage, making it an attractive location for both residents and tourists. This housing initiative is expected to provide significant support to the local community, enhancing living conditions and boosting the regional economy.

The IHRU's efforts to provide affordable housing across Portugal reflect a broader commitment to social welfare and housing accessibility, crucial for both local residents and newcomers seeking affordable living options.
