Funchal municipality received the Esri 25+ Award for more than two decades of work with Geographic Information Systems.

The Câmara Municipal do Funchal received the Esri 25+ Award at the Encontro de Utilizadores Esri Portugal 2026 on 14 October at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

The award recognised the municipality's more than two decades of using, developing and consolidating Geographic Information Systems as strategic instruments for knowledge, planning and management of the municipal territory.

It also recognised Funchal's continued investment in technological modernisation, the production, structuring and availability of quality geographic information, and the development of innovative solutions for more efficient, transparent and citizen-oriented public administration.

The FNC.CITYLAB investment totalled €1.08 million. According to the sources, it aimed to place Funchal at the forefront of public-service modernisation and reinforce urban planning, land-use planning, environment and inspection.

The distinction also recognised the work, knowledge and dedication of leaders, technicians and municipal services that contributed to the evolution of Funchal's Geographic Information System. The municipality said the recognition and FNC.CITYLAB reaffirmed its intention to pursue smarter, integrated, sustainable and participatory territorial management.
