Chega councillor opposes Praia Formosa parking cut
Luís Filipe Santos is seeking answers on developer benefits, parking charges and public access before a proposed change goes ahead.
Chega councillor Luís Filipe Santos will argue for the postponement of a decision scheduled for Thursday on a proposal to reduce planned public parking at Praia Formosa. Santos, a councillor on Funchal City Council, contests the proposal.
The proposal would amend the Urbanization Contract. According to Santos, it would reduce the underground public-use parking spaces developers committed to build from 600 to 360, leaving 240 fewer spaces than initially planned.
Santos wants the municipality to clarify the economic advantages for developers and the compensation planned for the population. He acknowledges that municipal services gave technical justification for the change, but says questions remain over its economic impact, parking-use conditions and guarantees of public access to the beach.
He also wants to know who would operate the car parks, how much users would pay and how access to the bathing area would be ensured.
