A covered 400-metre kart circuit at Água de Pena by Machico, where children drive their own kart from seven and smaller ones ride belted in beside a parent.

It sits under the approach ramp of the airport, which is the whole point: it is the only kart track on Madeira that still runs in rain. The layout is technical rather than a plain oval, so teenagers stay interested, and children come away talking about the timing board with their lap time on it. Reviews split sharply on the staff - most describe them as patient and visibly safety-first with children, a minority describe the opposite.

Worth knowing: Message the Facebook page rather than filling in the website form; reviewers say it gets an answer far faster. The entry session is ten minutes, which goes quickly - budget for two if the children take to it.

Rental 13 € for 10 minutes, 23 € for 20, 34 € for 30, per person. Race formats - five minutes of practice and then a 10- or 20-minute race - are 22 € and 30 €, both need at least five people, and the site sells them as up to 18 years. Under-sevens go in the two-seater with an adult.
