A rebuilt seafront plaza a short walk from Praia da Calheta, split into a giant ship-shaped climbing structure for six- to twelve-year-olds and a protected corner for two- to five-year-olds.

The council spent 202,000 euros on roughly 550 square metres, themed on the sea, and included a swing built to take a wheelchair. The adjoining praceta has shaded benches for the adults. It is the best-equipped municipal playground on this coast and it is next to the island's original artificial sand beach, so the two make one outing.

Worth knowing: No opening hours are published, and nor is anything about fencing beyond the toddler corner - go and look before you let a two-year-old loose.
