A laurel-forest picnic ground directly off the Encumeada pass road, with tables, benches, fountains and barbecue stands a few steps from the car park.
There is no walk in and no gate: you park on the ER228 and the grass, the shade and the tables are right there, which is the whole appeal with tired children in the car. It is quieter than the picnic grounds at Queimadas or Ribeiro Frio. The PR22 trail leaves from here for anyone who wants to turn a stop into a walk, but the park itself is a stop.
Worth knowing: Bring your own charcoal - the barbecue stands are here, the fuel is not - and combine it with the Encumeada viewpoint just up the road.

Prices
Free. Camping on site is reported to need a permit from the forestry institute, which is worth confirming before you plan on it.
