A thatched forest house with picnic tables, toilets and laurel woods around it, four kilometres up a narrow road from Santana.

The ground around the Casa das Queimadas is flat and easy, and for a family that is the visit: shaded tables, a restored straw-roofed shelter that is a better building than most of the ones people photograph in Santana, and forest. The PR9 levada to Caldeirão Verde starts here and is a different proposition - a narrow dirt path with tunnels, not somewhere to take a young child. Underfoot it turns muddy for days after rain at this altitude.

Worth knowing: The Queimadas car park is small and fills early; Rancho do Pico das Pedras a short way off is the backup, and the access road up from Santana jams at weekends.
