WINDOW TO ASIA
Five kitchens of Asia under one pergola.
A terrace of rattan lanterns and bamboo on Estrada Monumental in Funchal, at the blue hour: five kitchens of Asia behind the glass. Stand on the pavement for a moment and look in.
Estrada Monumental, 348
Bangkok to Tokyo, on the Lido
Window to Asia cooks from five countries — Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan — in a single kitchen open to the room. Its guests come back for the pad thai, the duck curry, the nasi goreng and the gyoza, and finish with mango sticky rice. Outside, the terrace sits under a pergola of timber slats and rattan lanterns, behind a long bed of bamboo.

Modelled by Madeira1 from photographs of the restaurant and the street. The building's frontage, the road and the hotel opposite from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL).
The pergola, the bamboo, the glass and the gold lettering follow the photographs. The room inside is an interpretive reconstruction: the cone lamps, the cane counter and the rack of glasses are as photographed; how they are arranged, the painting on the wall, and the people, are ours.
