ÁKUA
A cosy evening with Chef Júlio Pereira.
A small restaurant glowing on a narrow street in Funchal's old town, at the blue hour. Stand outside for a moment and look in.
Rua dos Murças, 6
A street restaurant for the sea
Júlio Pereira learned the sea in Ericeira, the fishing town on Portugal's west coast where he grew up. In 2019, six years after moving to Madeira, he opened Ákua here as what the restaurant calls a street restaurant, for the flavours of the sea and of that childhood. Take the counter: it faces the open kitchen, and you watch every plate being made.
From the restaurant's own account and the Michelin Guide.

The façade, the shopfront and the terrace follow the photographs. The room inside is an interpretive reconstruction: the counter, the tiles, the stair and the lamps are as photographed; how they are arranged, and the people, are ours. The figures are Microsoft Rocketbox avatars (MIT licence).
