Two Portuguese Air Force F-16 fighter jets carried out touch-and-go manoeuvres at Madeira Airport on Monday. According to Diário, the operation was part of a military exercise.
The operation drew attention from people near the airport and was captured by the YouTube channel Madeira Airport Spotting. A touch-and-go manoeuvre involves an aircraft approaching the runway, touching the pavement and taking off again without completing a landing.
The use of F-16 aircraft in the region is not unprecedented. In December 2022, a pair of F-16M aircraft flew over the archipelago and Madeira Airport during an operational flight before continuing to Porto Santo.
Portuguese Air Force F-16M aircraft belong to Squadrons 201 "Falcões" and 301 "Jaguares", based at Air Base No. 5 in Monte Real. The aircraft are part of the national airspace defence structure.
