A series of traffic accidents on Madeira's major roads have resulted in multiple injuries, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.

A spate of traffic accidents has occurred on Madeira Island's main roads, causing injuries and drawing attention to road safety issues. The incidents involved multiple vehicles, including cars and a motorcycle, and took place over two consecutive days.

Accident Details

On February 24, 2026, at around 16:30, an accident between three cars occurred on the expressway from Câmara de Lobos to Estreito. A woman in her 50s was injured, experiencing chest pains from the seatbelt impact. She was treated and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

Earlier the same day, another accident involving a motorcycle and two cars happened in the tunnel of Viveiros, towards Funchal-Caniço. A 56-year-old woman sustained arm injuries, suspected to be fractured, and was also taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment.

On February 23, 2026, an accident involving five cars occurred near Boa Nova, in the direction of Funchal-Caniço. Two individuals were injured, both experiencing chest pains. One of the victims was a 48-year-old man. All injured parties were transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

Road Safety Concerns

These incidents highlight the ongoing concerns regarding road safety on Madeira's expressways. With the increase in traffic due to tourism and local commutes, the risk of accidents has grown, underscoring the need for improved road infrastructure and safety measures.

Local Authorities' Response

The rapid response of the Bombeiros Voluntários de Câmara de Lobos and Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses underscores the readiness of local emergency services to deal with such incidents. However, there is a call for more preventive measures to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists.
