PS seeks safeguards for fishing at Calheta recreation port

The PS presented a draft resolution in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira recommending that the Regional Government adopt measures to safeguard fishing activity at the recreation port in Calheta.
Gonçalo Leite Velho said tourism cannot push fishing away. According to Diário de NotĂcias Madeira, the PS wants to ensure fishermen can use the port under accessible conditions.
The proposal calls for the concession contract to be changed to include rules safeguarding fishing activity. It also says that, after hearing fishermen, areas for fishing-vessel access should be defined.
Leite Velho proposed a specific, proportional and differentiated tariff for fishing vessels, separate from that applied to recreational vessels. The tariff would be approved by the sub-conceding entity and publicised.
The draft resolution also recommends investigating the legality of barriers to quay access, gates on walkways and other measures restricting public or fishermen's access to the infrastructure.
