Porto Moniz sea-bed cleanup held at shelter port
Madeira GuidePorto Moniz held a sea-bed and surrounding-area cleanup during Blue Flag anniversary celebrations, with public bodies, companies and first-cycle pupils taking part.
A cleanup operation targeted the sea bed next to the Porto de Abrigo do Porto Moniz on the morning of September 22. It was part of another edition of the Porto Moniz Sorridente initiative, promoted by the municipality.
The action took place during celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Blue Flag and aimed to preserve the municipality's maritime area. It involved the GNR, Comando Territorial da Madeira, the Direção Regional do Ambiente e Acção Climática, the Junta de Freguesia do Porto Moniz, Sanas Madeira, the Associação Humanitária de Bombeiros Voluntários de São Vicente e Porto Moniz, Aquário da Madeira, Clube Naval do Seixal and companies from the municipality.
First-cycle students from the Escola Básica e Secundária com Pré-Escolar e Creche do Porto Moniz also took part and helped remove waste from the surrounding area.
Municipal president Olavo Câmara said the initiative has been running for several years and helps protect the sea that borders the municipality's four parishes. He said environmental enhancement is a local-authority priority, pursued through cleanup and preservation work, awareness and public involvement.
Funchal NotĂcias reported that the municipality said it would preserve natural resources and described protection of the sea and coast as a collective responsibility and an investment in Porto Moniz's future.

Olavo Câmara said Porto Moniz's natural heritage supports an important part of the municipality's economy and that there is a responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
