Madeira Island experienced a series of unfortunate traffic incidents recently, resulting in multiple injuries and heightened concern among residents and tourists alike. The accidents occurred over several days and involved various types of vehicles, necessitating swift action from local emergency services.
Chain Collision on the Via Rápida
On March 9th, a chain collision involving three cars took place on the Via Rápida, in the area of Boa Nova, heading towards Funchal from Caniço. The incident resulted in minor injuries to two individuals—one woman in her 40s and a man in his 60s. Both were quickly attended to by emergency services and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for further evaluation. Despite the severity of the collision, emergency equipment for extracting trapped individuals was not required.
Rear-End Collision in Santa Rita
Earlier in the day, a separate rear-end collision occurred at the exit of the Via Rápida in Santa Rita, involving two cars. A 59-year-old woman sustained injuries to her jaw, chest, and thorax. She received immediate medical attention from the Funchal Fire Department and was also taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Motorbike Accidents Increase Concerns
Motorbike accidents added to the list of road incidents, with a young motorcyclist in his 20s losing control of his bike on Rua da Austrália, in Bairro da Nazaré, on March 7th. He collided with a car, sustaining a leg injury, and was transported to the hospital. Another incident involved a car rear-ending a motorbike on the Via Rápida, also in Santa Rita, causing a young rider to injure his ankle.
These incidents underline the importance of road safety and the need for both locals and visitors to remain vigilant while driving on Madeira's roads, known for their scenic but often challenging routes. Authorities continue to stress the importance of adhering to traffic laws to prevent further occurrences.
