Madeira Island witnessed a flurry of emergency responses on March 7, 2026, involving accidents and incidents that have put the local emergency services on high alert. These incidents took place in different parts of the island, highlighting various safety concerns for both residents and tourists.
Motorcycle and Car Collision
In one of the incidents, a 23-year-old motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a car on Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América, in the Bairro da Nazaré. The young man suffered a suspected leg fracture and was promptly transported to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses.
Car Rollover Incident
Another significant incident involved a car rollover in the Pestana Júnior tunnel, near the access to the expressway from Campo da Barca in Funchal. Two individuals were injured: a 25-year-old man who was initially trapped inside the vehicle, suffering a cut to his arm, and a 39-year-old man with head pain. Both were rescued and taken to the hospital.
Fatal Choking Incident
Tragically, in a separate incident in Camacha, a 52-year-old man choked and went into cardiac arrest. Despite efforts by the Bombeiros Sapadores de Santa Cruz to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Animal Rescue
In a heartwarming rescue, the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses saved a dog that had become trapped in a levada on Rua Engenheiro Adelino Amaro da Costa in Funchal. The dog sustained minor injuries and was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.
These incidents underscore the importance of safety and preparedness in Madeira, where both natural landscapes and urban environments pose unique challenges.
