Madeira Government mourns Celedónio de Abreu in Australia

The Regional Government mourned Celedónio de Abreu, a Madeiran community figure in Australia who worked with Portuguese people for decades.

The Regional Government expressed sorrow at the death of Celedónio de Abreu, a Madeiran living in Australia, in a note issued through the Direção Regional das Comunidades e Cooperação Externa.

De Abreu was noted for decades of work with the Madeiran and Portuguese community in Australia. His work included cultural, musical and religious initiatives. More recently, he served as president of the Comissão de Nossa Senhora do Monte.

He was involved with Portuguese-language radio in Australia for 34 years. Through radio, he helped promote the Portuguese language, traditions and ties to the homeland.

In 2023, he received the Portuguese Citizen of the Year award for his contribution to the Portuguese community. That year, the Regional Government of Madeira gave him a Nota de Louvor for his work and dedication to the Madeiran community.

The Direção Regional das Comunidades e Cooperação Externa said his death was a deeply felt loss for the Madeiran community in Australia. The Regional Government sent condolences to his family, friends and the Madeiran community in Australia.
