Funchal hosts a series of events to mark Equality Week, highlighting the importance of rights and combating societal inequalities.

In celebration of Equality Week, occurring from March 2 to 8 under the theme "The Equality that April Opened! Reinforcing Rights – Fulfilling the Constitution!", the USAM (Union of Madeira's Trade Unions) is organizing a series of awareness activities within the city of Funchal.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Commission for Equality between Women and Men (CIMH), aims to engage the public in discussions about the current political and social climate. The focus is on reaffirming the 'values of April', a reference to the democratic revolution in 1974 known as the Carnation Revolution, which ended decades of dictatorship in Portugal.

The week is particularly significant in today's context, where there is a pressing need to uphold the rights gained through this historical movement and to address ongoing inequalities, particularly in the workplace.

Simultaneously, the regional Civil Protection service is observing the International Day of Civil Protection with a week-long series of activities at Funchal's Praça do Povo. These activities, which started with events for children and families, are designed to bolster a culture of prevention and resilience among the local populace.
