The Machico Municipal Assembly has turned down several public space improvement proposals from JPP, despite the party's insistence on their importance for local quality of life.

The Municipal Assembly of Machico recently voted against several proposals from the political group Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) aimed at enhancing public spaces within the region. The proposals were brought to the assembly on February 25th, with JPP highlighting their potential to significantly improve the quality of life for Machico residents.

Among the recommendations made by JPP were the repainting and reorganization of parking space markings around the Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, the local swimming pool, and the municipal football field. These efforts were described as crucial for optimizing the area's functionality and safety.

  • Repainting and reorganizing parking spaces
  • Regular maintenance of sea access points used by diving and surfing schools, and local and tourist maritime operators
  • Cleaning and improving the condition of sidewalks and roadways, especially in areas prone to landslides
  • Renovation of the old school in Porto da Cruz into a cultural and community space

JPP argued that these initiatives are essential for maintaining the region's appeal and safety, particularly for tourists and residents who frequently use these public amenities. However, the assembly dismissed the proposals, asserting that ongoing maintenance and improvement projects are already addressing these issues.

Despite the assembly's assurances, JPP representatives expressed skepticism, noting that the current state of public infrastructure does not reflect the claimed progress. Issues such as uneven sidewalks and poorly marked parking spaces remain prevalent, undermining daily life and accessibility in Machico.

The reality on the ground does not consistently confirm these operational claims, four months into the administration's term.
