Funchal hosts longevity forum at Colégio dos Jesuítas
Jorge Carvalho opened the event, which includes round tables on active participation, health, technology, ageism and intergenerational relations.
The second edition of "Longevidade na Primeira Pessoa" is taking place today at Colégio dos Jesuítas in Funchal. The Municipality of Funchal organised the event to encourage reflection on the challenges and opportunities of ageing, value older people's role in society and promote a positive, active and participatory view of longevity.
At the opening, Câmara Municipal do Funchal president Jorge Carvalho highlighted the meeting's importance to municipal policies promoting active life. He referred to the municipality's work on physical activity and quality of life, including municipal gyms, and to the Taxi +75 programme, which supports taxi use for people over 75, including transport for supermarket shopping.
The first round table focused on life paths and active participation in society. Isabel Santa Clara, Rocha da Silva and Rui Cunha were expected to take part, although the final composition was still subject to confirmation.
The second round table focused on health, innovation and technology in the service of longevity. It included Pedro Ramos, Maria da Luz Brazão and Paulo Vasconcelos Freitas and considered healthcare models, home hospitalisation, remote patient monitoring and digital inclusion for older people.
Afternoon sessions are due to address ageism and intergenerational relations. Ana Clara Silva and Ana Luísa Correia, known as Chinha, are planned for the ageism discussion. Graça Alves and Manuel Alexandre da Costa, accompanied by his grandson, are to take part in a session on grandparents. Councillor Helena Leal is due to close the event.
