Francisco Franco school inaugurates ‘A Semente’ sculpture
The sculpture "A Semente", created by Dina Pimenta and Sílvio Cró, was financed by Câmara Municipal do Funchal and installed in a renovated garden.
Escola Secundária Francisco Franco inaugurated the sculpture "A Semente" on 9 October during its School Day celebrations for 50 years of Madeira's Autonomy. Helena Leal, a Funchal councillor, attended the ceremony.
Câmara Municipal do Funchal financed the sculpture. The project also renovated the surrounding space, now called Jardim da Autonomia. Funchal council said the work is integrated into a new garden with endemic plants from the region.
The school's History department promoted the initiative with the Associação de Estudantes da Escola Secundária de Francisco Franco, or AEFF. Professor Olavo Teixeira, delegate of the History group, was responsible for the initiative. The WILD project, coordinated by teacher Teresa Jardim, also took part.
The project was developed over several months with members of the educational community and partner institutions. It aimed to link art, history and regional identity. "A Semente" symbolises growth, renewal and the future. It is connected to the school's "Herbário da Democracia" mural, which evokes the 1974 Revolution and the achievements of freedom and democracy. According to the school's History department, the sculpture marks Madeira's political affirmation path begun in 1976 with Autonomy.
Funchal council said the work joins the "Mural da Liberdade: Revolução em Cores" at the same school. Câmara Municipal do Funchal also financed the mural, which was developed under the "50 anos de abril: Olhares e Perspetivas" programme.
