Chain Collision and Other Accidents Impact Madeira

On March 9th, 2026, a chain collision involving three cars occurred on the highway in the Boa Nova area, heading from Caniço to Funchal. The accident, which took place around 7 PM, resulted in minor injuries to two individuals: a woman in her 40s and a man in his 60s. Both victims were promptly attended to by the Madeiran volunteer firefighters and were transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for further care.
In a separate incident on March 7th, a car overturned in the Pestana Júnior tunnel on the access road to the highway from Campo da Barca, Funchal, at around 5:40 PM. The accident led to injuries for a 25-year-old man and a 39-year-old man. The younger man was initially trapped inside the vehicle but was extricated by nurses from the Portuguese Red Cross. Both victims were treated for their injuries and transported to the hospital.
Additionally, a tragic incident occurred on the same day, March 7th, when a 52-year-old man choked and subsequently died on Caminho da Igreja, Camacha. Despite efforts by the Santa Cruz firefighters to resuscitate him, the man could not be saved.
Earlier in the year, on February 3rd, a severe workplace accident took place on Rua Vale da Ajuda in Funchal. A worker in his 30s was struck by several bags of cement and left unconscious. He was rushed to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça and remains in critical condition.
