Addictive behaviours conventions underway in Funchal
Specialists, health professionals, researchers and representatives from several territories are meeting in Funchal to discuss prevention, treatment and harm reduction for addictive behaviours and dependencies.
The 6th Convention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies of Madeira and the 2nd Convention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies of Macaronesia are taking place at Casa de Saúde S. João de Deus, in Trapiche, Funchal. The two-day event is being held in the Auditório São Bento Menni and continues tomorrow.
The conventions bring together specialists, health professionals, researchers and representatives from several territories to discuss prevention, treatment and harm reduction. Topics include alcohol and licit and illicit substance use in Madeira and other Macaronesian territories, synthetic drugs, cannabinoids, mental health, prevention among younger generations and the impact of gambling on young people.
The programme also covers intervention with women with disorders associated with substance use and links between addictive behaviours, public safety, physical activity and ADHD. It aims to promote the exchange of experiences among Macaronesian territories and more integrated responses to addictive behaviours and dependencies.
At the opening session, Funchal councillor Helena Leal said prevention, awareness, early intervention and cooperation between organisations were important. She said the municipal executive considers investment in health and well-being a priority. Leal also referred to a protocol signed this year between Funchal City Council and Casa de Saúde de São João de Deus to help integrate users in the clinical discharge phase into municipal spaces, including Municipal Gyms, the Funchal Community Centre and the Senior University.
The programme ends on Friday with a March for Mental Health scheduled for 17:30.
