A dive centre thirty metres from the water at Caniço de Baixo, on a marine reserve whose house reef a confident child can snorkel from the shore.

The draw for families is the location rather than a children's programme: the Garajau reserve starts at the doorstep, so nobody sits on a boat before they see a fish, and there are warm showers, changing rooms, toilets and a restaurant on the same site. Every published price is for scuba, not snorkelling, and no minimum age appears anywhere - third-party listings quote figures the centre itself does not, so a child's place has to be agreed on the phone. The site is German-only.

Worth knowing: It shuts for about seven weeks after the first week of January - the one window in the year when the reserve is easiest to reach and this centre is closed.

Prices and opening times change without notice, and on this island they change often. Everything here carries the date it was checked in our research notes; if a place has moved or closed, tell us and we will fix it.
