"40 Anos | 40 Fotografias" is a travelling photography exhibition in the atrium of the Arquivo e Biblioteca da Madeira in Funchal, open since 13 October and running until 30 November. It marks the 40th anniversary of Lusa, Portugal's national news agency, with 40 press photographs that trace the country from 1986 to today: joining the European Community, cultural and technological change, disasters, economic crises, climate change and the COVID epidemic. A further ten images deal with Madeira. It is a compact show, best suited to anyone curious about modern Portugal or with an hour to spare in Funchal rather than a reason to cross the island.

Practical information

The archive and library building is in Funchal but outside the old town; a taxi or a city bus is the easiest way up without a car. The listing gives no route or parking information.
