The Maritime Authority of Funchal has extended the strong wind warning for the Madeira archipelago due to forecasted high wind speeds. Here's what residents and visitors should know.

The Maritime Authority of Funchal has announced the extension of a strong wind warning for the Madeira archipelago. Originally set to expire on March 12, the warning is now prolonged until 6 PM on March 13. This decision follows the receipt of a Signal 6 Weather Warning from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), indicating adverse weather conditions.

The archipelago is expected to experience east/northeast winds ranging from fresh to very fresh, with speeds between 31 and 50 km/h. At times, these winds may intensify to strong levels, reaching 51 to 61 km/h, particularly towards the evening. Despite the high winds, visibility is predicted to remain generally good, though it may occasionally drop to moderate levels.

This weather phenomenon is part of a broader pattern affecting the region, where seasonal changes often bring about such conditions. The island's geographical location in the Atlantic makes it susceptible to sudden weather changes, which can impact both local life and tourism activities.

For residents and tourists on the island, it is advisable to stay informed through local news outlets and heed any safety advisories issued by the authorities. Outdoor activities, particularly those at sea or in exposed areas, should be approached with caution.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and mild climate, often attracts visitors seeking outdoor adventures. However, during periods of strong winds, activities such as hiking, sailing, and other outdoor sports may need adjustments to ensure safety.
