In a series of unfortunate events, Madeira’s main highway, Via Rápida, witnessed several incidents this week, affecting both locals and tourists. From vehicle collisions to health emergencies, here's what happened.

This week, Madeira's Via Rápida became the scene of multiple incidents that disrupted traffic and raised safety concerns among locals and tourists alike.

Young Motorcyclist Injured in Collision

On March 6, 2026, a young motorcyclist in his twenties was injured when a car collided with his motorcycle on the Via Rápida in Santa Rita. The collision occurred when the car rear-ended the motorcycle, causing the rider to suffer an ankle injury. Emergency services were quick to respond, and the injured motorcyclist was transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment.

Woman Suffers Health Emergency on Highway

The day before, on March 5, 2026, a woman in her forties experienced a medical emergency while riding her motorcycle on the same highway, also near Santa Rita. She lost control of her vehicle due to feeling unwell, resulting in a minor accident. The woman reported discomfort in her rib cage and was also taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the emergency services.

Car Fire Extinguished by Driver

In another incident earlier in the week, on March 4, 2026, a car caught fire on the access road to the Via Rápida from Pilar. Fortunately, the driver managed to extinguish the flames before they spread further. The incident still required the attention of the Funchal Fire Brigade, who arrived on the scene with a fire engine to ensure the area was safe.

These incidents highlight the importance of road safety and emergency preparedness for both residents and visitors on Madeira's main transportation artery. Via Rápida is a crucial route that connects various parts of the island, and any disruption can have significant implications for traffic flow and safety.
