Ribeira Brava Designates Chapel and Manor House as Municipal Monuments
Madeira GuideThe Ribeira Brava municipality has declared the Chapel of Bom Despacho and Solar do Morgado as Municipal Monuments, opening avenues for cultural preservation and tourism enhancement.
In a significant move aimed at preserving local heritage, the Ribeira Brava municipality has classified the Chapel of Bom Despacho and the Solar do Morgado, located in the Vigia area of Campanário, as Monuments of Municipal Interest. The decision was ratified during a council meeting after a period of public consultation.
This classification is a strategic step to protect and valorize local heritage, enabling access to public funding for the conservation and restoration of these historic structures. Jorge Santos, the president of the council, highlighted that this initiative not only safeguards the cultural significance of these sites but also enhances their appeal as tourist attractions.
The Chapel of Bom Despacho and the Solar do Morgado are integral parts of Ribeira Brava’s architectural heritage. The chapel, with its historical and religious importance, and the manor house, previously owned by Jerónimo de Atouguia Bettencourt, represent significant cultural and historical narratives that enrich the local community.
Apart from the heritage designation, the council meeting also approved several social support measures. This includes the issuance of 12 new Municipal Elderly Cards, benefiting 671 residents with subsidies for medications, diapers, and medical examinations. A new regulation was also passed to facilitate the introduction of a Senior Solidarity Transport service, aimed at easing mobility for elderly residents.
Additionally, the council has committed to improving living conditions by approving the renovation of a dilapidated house for a needy family, marking the sixth such intervention since the start of the current administration in October.
