PTP Criticizes Political 'Theater' During Deputies' Visit to Porto Santo
Madeira GuideThe PTP accuses the recent visit of 23 national deputies to Madeira of being a politically motivated showcase, akin to North Korean tours, focusing only on positive aspects.
The Partido Trabalhista Português (PTP) has strongly criticized the recent visit of 23 deputies from the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, labeling it as a 'political theater' reminiscent of North Korean tours. According to the PTP, the visit was meticulously orchestrated to highlight only the region's successes and avoid discussing any failures or controversial projects.
The visit, which took place in early March 2026, included stops at key sites such as the EEM batteries, the golf course in Porto Santo, and a desalination plant. These locations were chosen to align with the government's sustainability agenda, presenting a curated image of progress and innovation.
PTP spokesperson Raquel Coelho pointed out the glaring omissions in the itinerary, notably the absence of visits to problematic projects like the algae factory in Porto Santo, which has been criticized for its lack of visible returns on investment. Coelho likened the visit to staged tours in closed regimes, where only the 'official reality' is shown to outsiders.
The PTP's criticisms highlight ongoing tensions between the regional government and opposition parties regarding transparency and the portrayal of Madeira's development to national representatives. The party's statements suggest a need for more comprehensive and honest assessments of regional projects, including those that have not met expectations.
For residents and regular visitors of Madeira, these concerns reflect broader issues of governance and accountability, raising questions about how resources are allocated and the true state of infrastructural developments.
