The Socialist Party has raised concerns over the delays in correcting the Mobility Subsidy, accusing the PSD of bureaucratic maneuvers that affect thousands of Madeirans.

The Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira has expressed its dissatisfaction with the current management of the Mobility Subsidy, which is supposed to assist residents with travel costs between Madeira and mainland Portugal. The PS has filed a formal protest in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, accusing the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of deliberately delaying necessary corrections to the subsidy system.

Paulo Cafôfo, the leader of the PS in Madeira, voiced strong criticism against the PSD, claiming that their actions have transformed what should be a straightforward process into a complex bureaucratic challenge. According to Cafôfo, the current electronic platform for subsidy reimbursement is fraught with inefficiencies, leading to prolonged delays in payments to residents.

Complex Bureaucracy and Delayed Solutions

The PS argues that the existing model, implemented by the PSD/CDS government, has exacerbated the situation by introducing more bureaucracy and delays. Cafôfo emphasized that instead of simplifying the process, the government has made it more opaque and burdensome, resulting in a system that fails to meet its primary goal of ensuring territorial continuity between Madeira and the mainland.

The protest highlights how the convoluted nature of the current system affects thousands of Madeirans, who face excessive formalities and confusing requirements. Many residents experience unjust refusals and lengthy wait times for reimbursements, which are critical for maintaining their connection with the mainland.

Call for Urgent Reform

Cafôfo and his party are calling for urgent reforms to restore simplicity, justice, and efficiency to the Mobility Subsidy system. They argue that the current model has failed in its essential mission and demand that the government address these issues promptly to prevent further inconvenience for Madeirans.

"Promised simplification turned into a bureaucratic labyrinth, leaving residents to navigate unnecessary hurdles instead of receiving promised support," Cafôfo remarked.
