The Socialist Party (PS) has harshly criticized the national government's performance, accusing it of failing the Portuguese people and particularly disadvantaging Madeira.

Two years after taking office, the government of the Democratic Alliance (AD) faces significant criticism from the Socialist Party (PS) for allegedly failing to meet governance objectives and specifically disadvantaging the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

During a session in Porto Moniz, Sérgio Ávila, a member of the PS National Secretariat and former vice-president of the Azores Regional Government, highlighted recent surveys indicating the AD government has not achieved its goals. Ávila noted that the government's shortcomings are evident in several sectors including healthcare and housing.

According to Ávila, the healthcare system is struggling, with more Portuguese citizens lacking family doctors, a decrease of 700,000 consultations last year, and a growing number of patients awaiting surgery. In housing, Portugal has seen a 27% increase in prices, reportedly the second highest in the EU, complicating access to this essential need.

Ávila also criticized the rising cost of living, with increased prices for food, fuel, and other essentials, and a lack of government intervention to alleviate these burdens. Furthermore, he condemned proposed changes to labor laws that might strip rights from families, women, and vulnerable groups.

The Socialist Party's critique is part of a broader assessment conducted nationwide, aiming to evaluate the two-year performance of the AD government. Madeira, known for its unique cultural and natural attractions, remains a focal point of these discussions, given its strategic significance and tourism-dependent economy.
