A series of accidents on Madeira's highways have left multiple individuals injured, including a 56-year-old woman and a man aged 48, highlighting road safety concerns.

A series of traffic accidents occurred on Madeira's highways over the past two days, resulting in several injuries and highlighting ongoing road safety concerns for both residents and tourists.

Incident Details

On February 24, 2026, the Volunteer Firefighters of Câmara de Lobos were dispatched to an accident involving three cars on the highway from Câmara de Lobos to Estreito. A woman in her 50s sustained chest pain due to the seatbelt's impact, although she managed to exit the vehicle on her own. She was treated on the scene and transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further examination.

In a separate incident on the same day, a collision involving a motorcycle and two cars occurred in the Viveiros tunnel, heading from Funchal to Caniço. A 56-year-old woman suffered a suspected arm fracture and was also taken to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.

The day before, on February 23, 2026, another accident took place involving five cars near Boa Nova on the highway towards Caniço. Two individuals, including a 48-year-old man, experienced chest pain due to the collision. Both were promptly attended to and transported to the hospital.

Safety Measures and Concerns

These incidents underline the importance of road safety on Madeira's highways. Local authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further accidents. The region's rapid development and increase in traffic have necessitated a focus on infrastructure improvements and enhanced safety protocols.

Context for Tourists

Madeira's scenic highways, while offering breathtaking views, can be challenging due to their winding nature and varying elevations. Tourists unfamiliar with the local driving conditions are advised to exercise caution, especially in tunnels and on steep inclines.

The Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where the injured were treated, is a key medical facility on the island, providing comprehensive care for both residents and visitors alike.
