Traffic Accidents in Funchal and Santa Cruz
On March 16, 2026, a road traffic accident occurred on Rua do Engenho Velho, Funchal, involving two light vehicles. A man in his 70s suffered chest pains and was promptly attended to by the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal before being transported to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Earlier on March 14, another accident took place on Rua da Quinta do Leme, Funchal, where a 36-year-old motorcyclist was injured after his motorbike collided with a car. He sustained injuries to his rib cage and leg and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
In Santa Cruz, yet another incident involved a 43-year-old motorcyclist who was injured in a collision with a car on the Estrada Santo António da Serra. Complaining of pain in his arms and legs, he was rushed to the hospital by the Bombeiros Sapadores de Santa Cruz.
Suspected Fire in Funchal
On March 14, firefighters were also called to a suspected fire at an apartment in Bairro do Hospital, Funchal. Fortunately, the situation was a false alarm, as it was merely a case of a forgotten pan on the stove. The rapid response by 15 firefighters with five vehicles ensured that the situation was quickly resolved without any damage.
Public Disturbance in Funchal
In the early hours of March 14, a brawl broke out on Rua da Carreira, near Largo do Visconde do Ribeiro Real, resulting in three injuries. The altercation involved two men, aged 50 and 60, and a third individual in his 30s. The injured parties were treated for various wounds, including a laceration to the scalp and facial injuries. The local police, PSP, are investigating the incident.
